Samuel Wingate Jones was born in Lebanon, Maine, on January 21, 1807, graduated from Dartmouth Medical College in 1840, and practiced medicine in New Hampshire. He later studied law, and practiced in York County, Maine, from 1865 to 1897. Jones held a number of local civic positions, and wrote a comprehensive history of Lebanon, before his death in West Lebanon, Maine, on January 21, 1900.

The journal is a bound autograph manuscript account of a trip Jones made to the American Midwest between May 13 and June 10, 1850. He traveled by train, steamer, line boat, packet boat, horseback, and mail stage, and his journey took him from Lebanon, Maine, through New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York State, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, before returning to Maine. In his journal, Jones makes observations about the landscape and geography, industries and agriculture, architecture, slavery, and the differences between life in New England and the Midwest.
