Summary
Display label text from Lie of the Land: the Secret Life of Maps, British Library, 2001-2002: "Ethnic map of Slovakia, 1941 On this map, based on official Czechoslovak statistics, the numbers in the different racial groups, identified by colour, are shown by the sizes of the circles. It appears a model of academic analysis but it was actually a blueprint for action. Its German makers chose black to indicate the Jews (Juden) and the gypsies (Zigeuner). Nazi 'advisers' had already been seconded to help the Slovak president, Monsignor Tiso, with his antisemitic legislation. The inscription to the right of the title reads, chillingly, 'For official use only'. Deportations of Jews and gypsies to extermination camps started in 1942. Wilfried Krallert, 'Volkstumkarte der Slowakei Blatt 5', Vienna, 1941. Maps Y. 1911."
