Biographical / Historical Note
Sebastian Erart was born in 1647 and lived in the Flemish town of Condé-sur-l'Escaut.
Summary
Manuscript, on paper, in three hands, containing memoranda and accounts. The majority of the entries are memoranda by Sebastian Erart, who recorded notable personal information, beginning with his birth and baptismal dates and extending to entries about his marriage; the births, baptisms and confirmations of his numerous children; and births, marriages and deaths among his extended family. Other events mentioned include the coronation of Emperor Leopold I in 1658; the collapse of the chateau of Mons in 1661; and the smallpox epidemic of 1666, which claimed the lives of at least two of his children. The last entry in Sebastian's hand is dated 1669. Entries in a second hand, apparently that of one of Sebastian's sons, are dated from 1707 through 1729 and contain similar information about the following generation of Erarts. The notebook also contains a series of account entries detailing purchases of oats at the local market, 1647-1648.
