Summary
From an installation consisting of three artists' books, each "book" printed in 2000 complementary copies for the exhibition. Based on the layout of three Houston area newspapers: the Manila headline, a bi-weekly Filipino publication, El Día, a Spanish language daily, and the Houston forward times, the largest Black-owned weekly newspaper in the South. The artist replaced layout elements with rectangular blocks of color (in different shades): black (title and other identifying information) yellow (articles and other text), cyan (photos), red (advertisements). The installation coincided with the 2008 U.S. presidential election. From the artist's website viewed May 21, 2013: "As a racially politicized arena in which an American population was interrogating the place of "color" and ethnic politics, this work abstracted the content of each publication, creating a new visual format of reduced perceptual color for viewers to attempt to "read." Three bulletin boards served as a way to display all the pages at once."
