Biographical / Historical Note
John Cabell Riely, the son of James Evans Riely and Marianne Gateson Riely, was born in Philadelphia on August 27, 1945, and grew up in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He received his BA (1967) from Harvard and an MA and PhD (1971) from the University of Pennsylvania. Riely was an associate research editor of several volumes of the Yale Edition of Horace Walpole's Correspondence. He taught at Yale, Columbia University, and the University of Minnesota before becoming a member of the College of Arts & Sciences faculty at Boston University in 1981; he retired in 2003 and died January 22, 2011, in Newton Center, Massachusetts.
Summary
The collection consists of correspondence created and received by John C. Reily in the course of his scholarly activities, including extensive documentation relating to his research on 18th-century English literature and caricature, especially Horace Walpole, James Boswell, Samuel Johnson, Joshua Reynolds, Henry Bunbury, James Gillray, and Thomas Rowlandson. Correspondence consists largely of letters to and from Riely and other scholars of the 18th-century, including David Alexander, Andrew Wilton, Peter Willis, Thomas J. McCormich, and Richard Wendorf. Other papers relate more broadly to Riely's activities and involvement with various professional organizations and projects.
