Biographical / Historical Note
John Henry Wilton (1888-1947) was born in Leland, England, the son of John Wilton (born 1864) and Mary Hoskin Wilton (born 1860). His family immigrated to the United States in 1890, and they lived in Bakersfield, California. In 1914, he married Clyde Smith Nighbert Wilton (1886-1947), and they had twin daughters Elizabeth Wilton Nelson Magennis (1918-1981) and Jean Wilton (1918-1944). Wilton worked as a clerk for the Bakersfield Iron Works, and later for the White Motor Truck Company in San Francisco.
Kern City, California, was founded as Sumner in 1876, and incorporated as Kern City in 1892. In 1910, Bakersfield annexed Kern City, and it became known as East Bakersfield neighborhood.
