Biographical / Historical Note
Dr. Ahmed has been a member of the Geography & Earth Science faculty at UW-L since 1984. His excitement for Geography is as strong today as when he first started teaching. Originally from Bangladesh, Dr. Ahmed has maintained a very strong research interest in the formation of the monsoons of that country and how they effect the land and people of the area. He has received several research grants for this endeavor from sources including the United Nations Development Program. His interest in climate is not just restricted to Bangladesh, he also enjoys teaching his students about the micro-climate and weather patterns here in the local area as well as on regional and global scales. --UW-La Crosse Website.
S. Dara Shamsuddin, M. Sc., former professor, Department of Geography and Environment, Jahangirnagar, University, Savar, Dhaka. Specialization, Environment, Urban and Settlement. He was a US Fulbright Senior Scholar to the Department of Geography & Earth Science, University of Wisconsin La Crosse, (2001-2002) where he worked on cumulative impact assessment methods of water sector projects. He contributed towards development of the first EIA Guidelines for the water sector projects in Bangladesh. He has more than 30 publications in national and international professional journals and wrote chapters in books. --Book.
Summary
The central issue discussed in this book is what is now widely known as "Global Warming and Climate Change". It started in the early 1980s as the "greenhouse effect"--Warming of the atmosphere due to the absorption of earth's outgoing long wave radiation by the greenhouse gases. The level of coverage that the western mass media devoted to global warming was low prior to 1988. But interest increased significantly after the U.S. drought in 1988, and related U.S. Senate testimony by Dr. James E. Hansen, NASA's chief climate scientist, who attributed the abnormally hot weather to global warming. --Book.
