Biographical / Historical Note
The Carmen Copper Company (also known as the El Carmen Copper Company) was a New York-based mining company that owned and operated mines in Mexico.
Summary
The records include correspondence and financial records. The correspondence series comprises the bulk of the collection and documents the events of the Mexican Revolution and the associated Border War. A letter from company superintendent Frederick C. Alley dated 1917 January 25 details the Border War's Mexican Expedition, in which United States Army Major General John J. Pershing attempted to capture Pancho Villa in order to stop his attacks on American soil. The instability of the Mexican government is a recurrent point of discussion, especially as it pertains to the company's struggle for legal rights to their mining sites and claims during the conflict. Letters also mention controversy over the company's mining rights and the issue of Mexican miners accessing the company's sites. Clippings about the contentious mining situation are also present in correspondence. The financial records include mining tax receipts and company stock certificates in Spanish.
