Biographical / Historical Note
Justus Krauskopf, German painter, lithographer, teacher, and author, was born on November 21, 1787, in Kassel, Germany. He studied in Paris under Jacques Louis David from July 1812 through August 1813, and upon his return to Kassel opened a painting and drawing school. In the fall of 1833 Krauskopf and fellow artist Carl Glinzer traveled to Italy, spending most of their time in Rome and returning to Kassel in the spring of 1834. Krauskopf died in Kassell on November 14, 1869.
Summary
The collection consists of eight volumes of sketchbooks and autograph manuscript diaries by Justus Kraskopf. Four of the volumes date from 1833-1834 and cover Krauskop's time in Italy, primarily in Rome, and contain drawings of buildings and scenes in the city and surrounding countryside. One sketchbook is devoted to figure and costume studies and the remaining two have sketches of landscapes, people, and animals, including a camel. The sketches are in graphite, ink, and watercolor; many are captioned in German; the diary entries are entirely in German. Accompanied by an undated school notebook that Krauskopf titled "Figuren zu der raumlehre..." which contains his geometry exercises drawn in ink.
