Jacques Chardonne, the son of an American heiress and a French father, was born Jacques Boutelleau in southwestern France in 1884. He was the author of the trilogy Les destinées sentimentales, and Claire, which won the Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française in 1932. During World War II he supported collaboration with the Vichy government, and after the war he spent time in prison for his pro-Nazi activities. He died in La Frette-sur-Seine in 1968.
Maurice Martin du Gard, was born in Nancy, France in 1896. He was the founder and editor of the French literary review Nouvelles littéraires, author of Mémorables and Libéraux de Renan à Chardonne. He supported the Vichy government during World War II. He died in Versailles in 1970.
