Biographical / Historical Note
One of the earliest maps published by Willem Janszoon Blaeu was a fine wall map of America, first issued in 1608 and copied often to the end of the century. His map was very influential and until about 1650, virtually all maps of America were based on his cartographic delineations. The version here, without the usual decorative borders and text, is most likely the one issued in Rome by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi in 1686. By this time, the Blaeu map was completely out of date and it was sold more as a decorative object, perhaps to meet the increasing demand from the citizens of Rome who wanted to decorate the walls of their houses.
