After World War II, the United Nations, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund were established to 'ensure peace and prosperity' throughout the world in the face of the threat of communism. With the fall of the Soviet Union, critics of these organizations argue that they are ill-equipped to deal with human rights issues and the 'new world order.' This classic program examines the need for these organizations to adapt to changing political, economic, and social conditions in the world, and to begin dealing with complex, unforeseen issues such as ethnic conflict, internal disorder, and the breakdown of state institutions. It focuses on the impact of World Bank economic policies imposed on developing countries in the name of global economic reform, suggesting that the interests of foreign investors might be at odds with those of the indigenous populations.
