Summary
Reproduction of promissory note signed by Joseph Smith, Sr. and Alvin Smith on March 17, 1818. This is the earliest Smith document from Palmyra and the only known example of Alvin's signature. Color photo reproduction of the original document located in the Ontario County Record Center and Archives, Canadaigua, New York (Affidavits, Court of Common Pleas, Jan.-May 1818, AM01-187, Box 11211). The Smith's moved to Palmyra in 1816 and were sharecropping the land of their neighbor, Jeremiah Hurlbut. On March 27, 1818 the Smiths borrowed $65 form Hurlbut and singed the promissory note.
