Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), was a British poet and literary critic.
Summary
Correspondence between members of the Arnold family of Rugby, Warwickshire, England, including autograph letters, signed, from poet and literary critic Matthew Arnold to his mother, Mary Penrose Arnold; his brother, literary critic Tom Arnold; and to his sister Frances Arnold. Other correspondence primarily includes autograph letters from and to Josephine Benison Arnold, the second wife of Tom Arnold. Other correspondents include Frances Arnold-Forster; William T. Arnold; Henry Fitzalan-Howard, Duke of Norfolk; Julia Huxley; Mrs. Humphry Ward; and other friends and members of the Arnold family. Also included is a copy of William T. Arnold's article "Thomas Arnold the Younger" from The Century Magazine, May 1903, pages 115-127; manuscript notes on "Newman and the church" by Tom Arnold; a legal document concerning the estate of Tom Arnold; and some unidentified manuscript notes.
