本书先是对殷周金文族徽的研究状况进行了历史性的回顾, 就当前的学术研究及学术趋向进行了概述, 对目前所见的殷周金文总数进行了统计;再就是对殷周时期同一墓葬出土不同族属器物的源由进行了考证, 认为与墓主不同族属的器物是由墓主生前的"同轨", "同盟", "同位", "外姻"等"赠"助葬造成的.然后再结合殷周金文族徽的类型特点, 判别原则与整理方法, 对其进行归纳与研究, 总结出10类族徽铭文存在的形式和判断标准.
