Summary
Purchased writing book bound in vellum with the bookplate of Charles Powell, Stationer, London. Book is signed by Eliza Heath with dates November 11, 1787 and October 28, 1788. The first part of the book contains the index which is filled in. The body of the book contains "cures" and medical recipes for a large variety of household ailments. Some recipes are attributed to others including to physicians such as Daniel Sutton's improved method of inoculation for smallpox or Dr. {William] Heberden's recipe for the cure of ague. A few recipes are for farm animals, such as a purge for a horse. Some case histories with recipes have copied from published sources such as the Pubic Advertiser (London). Another example is "Directions sent from Holland in June 1723, to the Lord Berkeley, by the Professor Boerhaave and Mons. Van Osterdyck" concerning the gout. Additional loose pages of recipes have been inserted into the book.
