"The Natural History portfolio is a suite of twelve cyanotype impressions printed over archival pigment prints by Barbara Ciurej and Lindsay Lochman. The 16 x 20 inch portraits are printed digitally on archival Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Matte paper. The cyanotype solution (ammonium iron citrate and potassium ferricyanide) is hand-coated over the digital prints and exposed in sunlight. Plants were collected from gardens in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where all prints were made. The frontispiece, title page and colophon are printed digitally on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 100% cotton paper. Due to the acidic nature of the cyanotype process, prints are housed in unbuffered folios. Archival inks are used throughout. Portfolio enclosure by Julie Naggs and Trisha Hammer. Edition limited to four portfolios each containing 12 unique prints."--Colophon.
Summary
"In Natural History, plant forms integrate with portraits of women in the ripeness of their years, representing maturity as a web of interconnection. We photographed these women in the attitude of Roman portraits. After the application of light-sensitive cyanotype solution to the printed portraits, the images were overlaid with plants from our garden and exposed in sunlight. Suns and season inscribed the passage of time. Women and nature merged in these impressions. To study birth, death and regeneration pulsing through the ephemeral natural world, the portraits are gathered in this portfolio evoking an herbarium. Taxonomic references draw parallels between human and plant nature."--Introduction.
