Biographical / Historical Note
John Waller Hawkins (1873-1940) worked as a clerk in Texas General Land Office from 1903 until his death, except for military service as a major in the United States Army during World War I, 1916-1919.
Summary
Printed political campaign postcard soliciting support from voters in the Democratic Party during the political party's 1936 primary to elect John Waller Hawkins as its candidate for Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office. The postcard includes Hawkin's qualifications and a relief halftone photographic portrait of him as well as conversion information between Spanish customary units and United States customary units for measuring area. Hawkins lost the primary to William Henry McDonald, who served as commissioner from 1937 to 1939.
