The Yale Medical Library was opened in 1941. After a major expansion and renovation, it was renamed the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library in 1990. The Medical Library of the School of Medicine was a predecesssor of the Yale Medical Library. It was begun in 1917 in Brady Memorial Laboratory and moved to the second floor of Sterling Hall of Medicine in the 1920s. Marjorie Wildes served a librarian. That small collection formed the basis of the "General Medical Library" of the Yale Medical Library, also under the charge of Marjorie Wildes. The Historical Library and General Medical Library were united in 1948 when Frederick G. Kilgour became the first Librarian of the Yale Medical Library.

Reports are for fiscal years beginning July 1 and ending June 30. The collection includes tyepscript Report of the Librarian of the School of Medicine from 1917-1918 to 1939-1940; Report of the Librarian for the General Medical Library, from 1940-1941 to 1947-1948; printed reports of the Historical Library, 1940-1941 to 1949-1950; printed reports of the Yale Medical Library from 1949 to 1957; and duplicated reports from 1965-1966 on.
