Biographical / Historical Note
James P. Gardner graduated from the University of Chicago with a Bachelor of Arts in 1881, traveled to New Mexico after his graduation, and returned to Chicago in 1884. He married Ruth May Edgerton in 1885.
Ruth May Edgerton Gardner graduated from the University of Chicago with a Bachelor of Philosophy in 1881. She married James P. Gardner in 1885.
Summary
Seventeen autograph letters, signed, from James P. "Jim" Gardner to his fiancée, Ruth May Edgerton. Jim describes his railway trip from Chicago, Illinois to Springer, Colfax County, New Mexico, and his life in Springer. Jim also describes his work with cattle, his economic difficulties, his unsuccessful effort to purchase a ranch, his interactions with and racist views of Mexican Americans and Mexican-American women, and his hunting excursions.
