Date from Horace Walpole correspondence to Sir Horace Mann 20 November 1757: "... a new Gothic columbarium is a new thought of my own, of which I am fond and going to execute at Strawberry Hill."
With a note in Horace Walpole's hand in ink in lower right: N.B. There is an error in this drawing. The radius of the bow, wanting near a foot. The Ichnog will correct it.
With watermark along lower edge of paper, trimmed: D and C Blauw.
Formerly mounted on leaf 49 in an album assembled by Horace Walpole: Drawings and designs by Richd. Bentley ... [Strawberry Hill], [circa 1760].
Provenance
Sold at Strawberry Hill Sale, day viii, lot 57, to William Knight, Esq., £4.2.0; London sale number lot 1255 of the 10th day of sale, with the lot number still preserved on spine. Sold by Spencer through Fletcher to W.S. Lewis for £210, May 1926.
