Notes
Republication of two separate works originally published in 1851. The first had been delivered earlier as a lecture at the New York Mechanics Institute.
As originally published the two works were anticipated to be the first two in a series of publications presenting the author's solution to social problems of his time. A third was never issued. The present edition retains on the title pages of the parts their original numbering.
