Biographical / Historical Note
Eli Ives was a professor at the Medical Institution of Yale College from 1813 to 1853. He was named Lecturer on Diseases of Children in1820. According to his biographer, Dr. Howard A. Pearson, Ives likely made his lecture notes available to students for copying.
Emily Frances Briggs received her M.D. in 1898 from Boston University School of Medicine, which was then homeopathic. She practiced medicine in Voluntown, Connecticut in the period from about 1900 to 1905. Acording to a note in the volume, the volume was owned by Daniel Henry(?), M.D. and was presented to Briggs on December 10, 1897 by Mrs. Daniel Henry.
Summary
Bound volume written in ink with pencil emendations. There are topics but no lecture numbers or dates. "Lectures on the diseases of children" ends with "Finis" and is followed by three pages on hydrocephalus. When the volume is open from the back, the text includes "Catalogue of Medical Books" with alphabetical entries such as "Bell on Nerves" and the number of volumes (3 pages), followed by notes on four lectures by Eli Ives on nosology and fevers. A page in pencil is headed "Process for preparing the blue pill." This is followed by 8 pages of "receipts". The note taker is not identified. Some pages have been removed from the book prior to its donation and some pages have been scribbled upon in pencil.
