Summary
Sublime Communication Technologies is a critical cultural history of communication technologies, from railways and telegraphy to computers and the Internet. These technologies are sublime in the sense that they carry information above the earth, transforming the solidities of pre-capitalist social formations into thin air. They play a pivotal role in the cultural history of modernity. In this lively new study, Rod Giblett proposes a shift from a mythology of communication technologies involving command and control to one promoting commonality and community. Drawing on a wide range of contemporary and historical sources, it is the first book to assemble into a single overall account the scattered work of Walter Benjamin, Paul Virilio and Raymond Williams on this crucial area of cultural debate.
