Inscribed in graphite on verso: "Picture painted by Aunt Polly Jennings 1958 bought for ABL [Annie Burr Lewis] by WSL [Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis] at Mrs. Jennings show of pictures in Schoneman Galleries, East 57th Street, May 1958."
Biographical / Historical Note
Mary Dows Brewster Jennings was born in New York on January 2, 1871, the daughter of Elmina Dows and Benjamin Brewster. She attended the Brearley School and in 1896 married the financier Oliver Gould Jennings (1865-1936). The couple raised their two sons in New York, Newport, and Fairfield, Connecticut, where Mary Jennings was active in social and civic organizations. After the death of her husband she took up painting floral still lifes and exhibited in New York under the name of "Polly Jennings." She died in New York on May 6, 1964.
