Summary
Typescript memoir, corrected, documenting the lives of the Walker family in North Carolina, Colorado, and California, circa 1866-1931. Describes the lives of Jesse Martin Walker (1839-1898), his wife Sarah Curtis Walker (1846-1923), and their daughters Laura Walker Newton (1866-1946), Elizabeth Walker Hinton (1868-1924), Julia Olive Walker Barnard (1869-1940), Georgia Walker Pickett (1874-1934), Martha Walker Greene (1876-1955), Minnie Alice Walker Noel (1879-1931), and Nellie Walker Washburn (1882-1957). Documents the Walker family's migration from North Carolina to Colorado in 1871 and subsequent life in several towns in Colorado, including Cuchara, Huerfano, San Miguel, Grand Mesa, Silver Cliff, Grand Junction, and Ophir. Newton describes her family's investments, including gold mining, farming, ranching, and herding cattle, as well as relations between white settlers and Ute Indians and the removal of Ute Indians by the United States government, circa 1871-1872. She also details the lives of her mother and sisters, including their duties on the farm, education at the University of Denver, careers in teaching and optometry, religious lives as Baptists, and marriages. Later chapters describe the later lives of the family, circa 1923-1931, including Newton's marriage to Charles Sumner Newton (1863-1937) and life in Santa Barbara and Berkeley, California. Includes circa 41 photographs of the Walker family.
