Summary
This research project aims to investigate current options for accelerated drug development and how to balance benefit and risk from a health authorities' perspective around the globe. Accelerated Pathways are development schemes for new drugs and they intend to bring needed and important new treatments to patients more quickly. Health authorities are prioritizing resources on high potential drug candidates for unmet medical needs, which brought out the concept of breakthrough therapy designation (BTD) in US, Priority Medicine in EU, and SAKIGAKE in Japan. From a health authorities' perspective, reducing the development burdens for innovative therapies can have an impact on the overall cost of new drug development and eventually lower the drug price.
