The book is intended for clinicians, researchers, and students interested in expanding their understanding of human emotions and emotion theories. It comprises of nine chapters. Chapter one provides a review of the traditional and contemporary literature on emotions. Chapter three provides a review of the latest neuroscience research that has focused on social aspects that affect the way emotions are processed in the brain. Chapter four discusses sociocultural aspects of emotions and reviews a number of culturally specific emotional disorders that are uniquely shaped by the social context, such as <xh:i>taijin kyfusho</xh:i> and<xh:i> ataques de nervios</xh:i>. Chapter five expands the discussion to the socialization of emotions. Chapter six discusses social emotions in the context of human morality, such as guilt, shame, and pride. Chapter seven examines the social regulation of emotions, and the role of social institutions, such as the legal system and religious organizations, and their influence on emotion regulation. Chapter eight analyzes the social-emotional aspects of common mental disorders. The concluding chapter summarizes the previous chapters and also highlights gaps in the literature and suggests directions for future research."--Preface.
