"This particular piece of work began during the same time I was making Conversations with my mother in 2013 but I put it aside and came back to it a few years later--it seemed to be about something different in tone. It shows some of my early thoughts about armour [a new project], where I began to embellish the face with markings to mimic helmets. This wasn't right for the book, which [was] about my mother and I being at our most vulnerable and having no defenses at all ... My practice strongly revolves around the use of archetypes and how they permeate our everyday actions ... I [have spent] a long time thinking about the role of Mother--what it has meant to lose mine and how I cannot inhabit this role myself. I suspect much of my armour work that [has] followed Conversations with my mother is concerned with the Warrior archetype: literally defending myself against the role I cannot be, and against future narratives that are imposed upon me."--Artist's statement.
