Biographical / Historical Note
Frederick S. Hodges (1839- ) attended three boarding schools in New England between ages 16 and 19: J. Peete's Boarding School in Fall River, Massachusetts; Black River Academy in Ludlow, Vermont; and Roxbury English High School for Boys in Roxbury, Massachusetts. After completing his education, he worked on a farm and later worked as a railroad surveyor for the Union Pacific Railroad after the Civil War.
Summary
3 manuscript journals, signed, by Frederick S. Hodges documenting his daily activities and education while at boarding schools in New England, 1855-1859. Included are Hodges' leisure readings lists, an account ledger of his expenses as a student, and academic standing. There are also manuscript pages taken from a later journal recording Hodges' work on a farm, 1863.
