Summary
This update of a classic Horizon program traces the spread of AIDS, explaining how it affects the body's immune system and leads to killer infections and cancers. AIDS is caused by the HIV virus, and while there is no cure for the disease, it can be successfully treated with antiviral medication. AIDS was first identified in 1981, and since then it has resulted in the death of more than 30 million people. In many countries, particularly in some parts of Africa, there are only very limited prevention and treatment services, and AIDS is still a serious problem. However, since there has been greater spending on HIV and AIDS treatment, the number of deaths has begun to decline.
