To call this trek an ambitious hike would be something of an understatement. In National Geographic's AFRICA EXTREME Wildlife Conservation Society ecologist, Dr. Michael Fay, sets out to survey the biological richness of an entire forest ecosystem under pressure. His journey, named the Megatransect, was inspired by a desire to conserve the central African forests he loves. It takes the team on foot, from the flatlands of northern Congo, across twelve hundred miles of dense jungle and two nations, to the coast of Gabon. Team members find themselves braving raging rapids, deep sucking mud, malaria, impenetrable vegetation, stinging caterpillars, hepatitis, foot worms, leeches and tsetse flies. But Fay wouldn't trade this for anything.
