Summary
Is it better for a leader to be loved or to be feared? In chapter 17 of The Prince, Machiavelli, perhaps not surprisingly, deems "cruelty" preferable to "mercy" simply because it's safer, but he does warn against taking cruelty too far. In this program, successful leaders offer a range of opinions about Machiavelli's advice.
