Biographical / Historical Note
Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858) was a United States Senator from Missouri from 1821 to 1851. From 1853 to 1855, he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Missouri's 1st district.
Summary
4 autograph letters, signed, from Senator Thomas Hart Benton, 1826-1853, undated. Includes a letter from Benton to an unidentified individual expressing frustration with the Republican Party, 1831 May 11; a letter from Benton to John Letcher requesting a loan, 1843 February 22; a letter from Benton to Gwinn Harris Heap, diplomat, urging him to publish his journal in a pamphlet form, 1853 November 29; and a letter from Benton to an unidentified individual concerning Benton's re-election and the state of U.S. Congress, undated. Accompanied by a letter from James Davidson to Thomas F. Leaming, Esq., acknowledging the receipt of a favor for Benton, 1826 December 15. There is also a letter addressed to Virginia Governor James McDowell, Benton's brother-in-law, from McDowell's son, concerning the furnishing of his rooms and potential appointment, 1844 December 16.
