This data collection is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that evaluate the Bush presidency and solicit opinions on a variety of political and social issues. Topics covered include opinions of Mikhail Gorbachev, Lech Walesa, and Dan Quayle, United States relations with the Soviet Union and leader Mikhail Gorbachev, the status of the cold war, whether the United States was superior to the Soviet Union in military strength, the intent behind the upcoming summit meeting between Bush and Gorbachev, the possibility of nuclear war, proposed reductions in military spending, troop levels in Western Europe, and German reunification. Additionally, respondents were questioned regarding the drug problem, abortion, aid to Eastern Europe, American investment in Eastern Europe, trade relations with Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union's attitude toward changes in Eastern Europe, the probability of future Soviet control of Eastern Europe, and the future of communism in the Soviet Union, China, and Eastern Europe.
