Gideon Palmer (1793-1854), born in Montville, Connecticut, was a manufacturer of cottonseed oil.
Summary
Holograph manuscript memoir, with revisions, describing travel in Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia, in 1830, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 1833, seeking opportunities for the manufacture of cottonseed oil. Palmer discusses his opposition to slavery and to the use of slave labor in cottonseed oil mills; records conversations with slaveholders and enslaved people; and describes his observations of the slave trade in Richmond, Virginia, and customs of the Southern States including dueling.
