Casimir Leconte traveled to the French West Indies and the United States in 1850 December, reporting to Jean-Baptiste Dumas (1800-1884), French ministre de l'agriculture et du commerce, on the economic consequences of the abolition of slavery in French colonies in 1848. He was the author of Les Noirs libres et les Noirs esclaves aux Antilles, aux États-Unis et à Libéria ([Paris?]: publisher not identified, 1852).
Summary
Autograph manuscript report, draft with revisions, on economics of labor by freedmen in the French West Indies, enslaved African Americans in the United States, and citizens of Liberia. Leconte describes his observations during travel in the Caribbean Area and the United States in 1850, including description of agriculture in Trinidad, Cuba, Barbados, Saint Vincent, Martinique, Gaudeloupe, Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, and Jamaica; Usine Marly, a sugar factory in Guadeloupe; and plantations in Louisiana. The report also summarizes the political and economic history of Liberia, from its founding by the American Colonization Society in 1822 through independence in 1847, and of an adjacent colony founded by the Maryland State Colonization Society in 1834, through its merging with Liberia in 1857.
