Summary
Behaviour management guru Sue Cowley works with primary school teachers on issues of pupil behaviour, stress and school rules. She highlights how a good set of rules can help to create peace and harmony, while a badly drawn-up collection of commands can lead to chaos and confusion. Sue feels that some schools have too many rules and warns that rules drawn up in haste will be difficult to apply. She recommends a simple set of regulations that are easy for staff and pupils to understand and to follow. She visits a Birmingham primary school where the headteacher lets the pupils make the rules and discovers how rules created in consultation with the pupils deliver an effective way of working.
