Summary
In this, the first of two Shakespeare masterclasses, a group of Year 10 students from north London start on the play Othello for the first time. The activities Sabrina Broadbent uses here are applicable to any Shakespeare play. Sabrina's aim in these introductory sessions is memorable learning: keep it active, keep it fun, engage their curiosity. To do this, the students learn key quotes while walking, try writing a line of blank verse in iambic pentameter, and consider how a handkerchief might be used as a dramatic device. By the end of the activities, students should be intrigued by Shakespeare's use of language and story, ready to engage with the plot and the whole text of Othello in the second masterclass.
