Summary
Inabe is in between. By night he walks; by day he waits. He lives with his girlfriend in a small, cluttered apartment where care and affection are not overt but easily detected. Fired for theft, Inabe is not in a hurry to find a new job. Harboring a desire to be a poet, he feels inspired when he meets a published poet and decides to enter a poetry contest. He has no money, so when a friend tells him about a hospital that is paying a lot of money to inject human subjects with experimental medicine, Inabe responds with interest. He takes the 'job, ' buys himself new clothes and flowers for Amano, and happily asserts to a friend that he is now the breadwinner. Filled with pride, Inabe asks Amano what she would do if she had a lot of money. She says she wants to see Taiwan, while he says he wants to eat delicious food. When Inabe hears from a friend that the man who told him of the experimental injection has died, his life and relationship take a sudden turn.
