Summary
In this edition of Vets on the Wild Side we are introduced to a new approach to elephant contraception and the vets take a look at the problem of foot and mouth disease among these pretty creatures the carriers of foot and mouth disease. In the vast, open tracts of the Kruger National Park, an area the size of Belgium, a helicopter is the most efficient way to get around. On this occasion it is being used to carry a Wild Life Vet to find a specific elephant- a young female which was selected for a pilot scheme on a new form of contraception. She was vaccinated and fitted with a radio collar several months ago and the team want to know if the contraception has succeeded- or if she has become pregnant.
