Summary
Solar System 101: The Milky Way galaxy is home to our solar system. It is believed that our solar system formed at least four and a half billion years ago. A huge cloud of dust and gas collapsed into a dense mass. That mass began to spin and grew hotter and hotter until the sun was born. Eventually the rest of our solar system was formed, including eight planets, dwarf planets, and an asteroid belt. As vast and diverse as our solar system is, it is but one in a galaxy of billions of stars, in a universe comprised of billions of galaxies.
