How does pastoral care affect their Adressat_innen, their Anbieter_innen, and the Church? And what is it that works? This empirical evaluation study has collected this quantitatively and qualitatively. In four pastoral model projects of the EKD, target groups were addressed, the church work otherwise achieved little, and high and broad efficiencies were achieved among all participants: in Adressat_innen an increase in quality of life and life assurance; Seelsorger_innen increases in professional competence, satisfaction and fulfillment of meaning; with other professional groups and aid agencies, an increased appreciation for ecclesiastical and pastoral competences. The decisive factors were above all the quality of the pastoral relationship design, precise listening and understanding and the symbol and ritual competence of the Seelsorger_innen.
