Biographical / Historical Note
Winifred E. Johnson was the granddaughter of Theodore Lampson (1819-1899). Circa 1915, she compiled and published a collection of his letters from California written in 1852-1853 in an unidentified New York newspaper.
Summary
Scrapbook compiled by Winifred E. Johnson, containing primarily a series of newspaper clippings of her grandfather Theodore Lampson's letters to his family while he mined gold in California, 1852-1853, which she compiled and edited, circa 1915. Lampson describes his journey to California via Panama by steamship, his arrival in San Francisco and Mokelumne Hill, and gold mining, including profits and expenses. In 1853, he was unable to find work and planned on returning home. The scrapbook also includes postcards and magazine clippings depicting landscapes, flora, fauna, and missions in California, accompanied by manuscript annotations in Johnson's hand. Includes 1 photograph of Theodore Lampson in a United States Army uniform during the Civil War.
