Summary
Meldon Hulbert served in the Army as a paratrooper in Company C, 307th Airborne Engineer Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division and saw combat in the MTO and later in the ETO. Following the capture of Sicily, he and his outfit were sent to Italy. During the invasion of Anzio he and the rest of his unit were stuck a few miles away from the beach for about 60 days. From Anzio they were sent to England to prepare for the Normandy invasion. Hulbert landed near St. Mere Eglise on D- Day and was wounded five days later. He was evacuated to a hospital then returned to his unit in time for the jump into Holland. During Operation Market Garden, he crossed the Wall River and helped to secure the Nijmegen bridge. During the Battle of the Bulge, he fought around St. Vith. Hulbert later crossed the Rhine River and conducted raids going after German soldiers in Cologne. After the war, he met with Russian soldiers and confronted them about killing some American soldiers they were with. He claims that the Russian soldiers were drunk and killed several American soldiers, As a result he and a few others killed some Russian soldiers in revenge.
