Biographical / Historical Note
Julia Nichols Tyesi (also spelled Tish or Tisch) was an African-American teacher and missionary. She was born in Virginia, circa 1895, and lived in Newark, New Jersey, and East London, Cape Province, South Africa. She was married to South African Minister David Tyesi (died 1937). She and her husband were graduates of Virginia Seminary, Lynchburg, Virginia, and she taught in schools and churches while engaged in missionary work in South Africa.
Summary
Autograph letter, signed, from Julia Nichols Tyesi to Helen Burrell during Tyesi's mission in South Africa. She thanks Burrell for the books she sent and asks her for more, and discusses the desire of the local people for education. Accompanied by a printed card entitled "Missionary in America on a Furlough", which has a portrait of her, describes her mission activities in South Africa, and lists her mailing addresses in South Africa and New Jersey.
