Summary
Jazz musician, music producer and nonprofit chief executive Harold Raymond Battiste, Jr. was born October 28, 1931, in New Orleans. Battiste attended Dillard University, earning a B.A. degree in music in 1953. Battiste arranged or produced for Sam Cooke ("You Send Me"), Sonny and Cher ("I Got You Babe"), and Joe Jones ("You Talk Too Much"), earning six gold records. He discovered Dr. John and produced his earliest albums. In 1961, Battiste initiated the first African American musician-owned record label, AFO Records. Battiste lectured at colleges, including University of California, Los Angeles; University of Southern California, Southern University, and Le Torri Montanare in Lancano, Italy. He received the Beau Arts Award and the Mayor's Arts Award. In 1998, the city of New Orleans proclaimed his birthday Harold Battiste Day. He served on the faculty of the University of New Orleans. Battiste passed away on June 19, 2015 at the age of eighty-three.
