Summary
Civic leader and judge William H. Murphy, Sr. was born on April 20, 1917 in Baltimore, Maryland into the Murphy family, publishers of the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper. His paternal grandfather founded Baltimore's Afro-American newspaper. After graduation from Oberlin College in 1939, Murphy became the third African American to be enrolled at the University of Maryland Law School. Murphy studied there for two years until he was drafted to fight in World War II, completing his J.D. degree in 1946. He went into private practice in Cherry Hill, the working-class neighborhood of Baltimore where he and his wife resided. In 1970, Murphy won a seat on the Maryland District Court. As a retired judge, he served as chairman of the board of Provident Hospital, and was a member of both the Elks and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Murphy passed away on May 22, 2003 at age 86.
