Summary
Educator and pastor Lena McLin was born September 5, 1928 in Atlanta, Georgia. Her uncle, Thomas A. Dorsey, was known as the father of gospel music. She attended Chicago's McCosh Elementary School and was an accompanist for her uncle's Pilgrim Baptist Church choir. She graduated from Atlanta's Booker T. Washington High School in 1947. At Spelman College, McLin earned her B.M. degree in 1951. McLin also attended Chicago's American Conservatory of Music, Roosevelt University and Chicago State University. Her teaching career began at Hess Upper Grade Center in 1959. As music department chair of Kenwood Academy High School, McLin mentored Mandy Patinkin, Mark Rucker, Maggie Brown, Kim English and Robert "R" Kelly. In 1977, McLin wrote, Pulse: A History of Music. In 1982, she founded Holy Vessel Baptist Church. McLin published over 400 compositions and was a lecturer and workshop leader. McLin received the Outstanding Teacher Award in 1983.
