Summary
Music professor and pianist Matthew Kennedy was born on March 10, 1921 in Americus, Georgia. A young piano prodigy, Kennedy graduated with his B.A. degree from Fisk University in 1947. He earned his M.A. degree from the Juilliard School of Music in 1950 and completed doctoral course work at George Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee. Joining Fisk University as an associate professor in 1954, Kennedy married Fisk professor and piano soloist Anne Gamble in 1956. Appointed director of the Fisk Jubilee Singers in 1957, he traveled the world for the next twenty-three years. In 1958, Kennedy made his solo piano debut at Carnegie Recital Hall. He served as acting chairman of the Fisk University Music Department from 1975 to 1978. Kennedy retired from Fisk in 1986. In 2006, Kennedy received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Fisk University. Matthew Kennedy passed away on June 5, 2014 at age 93.
